Ashby was raised by his mother because his father was a workaholic. He and his planted flowers in the garden, painted pictures and cooked dinner. She also taught him how to play the piano. Even though Cordelia and Lennox's marriage was suffering, they made sure their son did not know. But when Ashby was twelve, his mother was diagnosed with breast cancer. Her left breast was removed and she went through chemo therapy, but unfortunately, she did not survive.
Left with a son he had barely ever spent time with, Lennox fired from his job because he was too depressed to work. He also asked Cordelia's mother, Agnes, to come over and take care of Ashby while Lennox was out sleeping around and drowning his sorrows in alcohol even though he was supposed to be looking for a job. Agnes left at night to go to her own house and this was when Lennox would physically and sexually abuse his son in order to take out his anger and sadness from losing his wife.
In high school, Ashby struggled to make friends and do well in school. When he came home, his father still used him as a target for his anger, which caused Ashby to involve himself in drugs. Due the the excessive intake of drugs and how much he missed his mother, Ashby fell into a deep depression and isolation. Lennox did not notice his son's behavior and it was not until he married his new wife, Rosalind, when he found out because she pointed it out to him. It was not that Rosalind cared about Ashby, she just didn't want his "illness" to rub off on her twins, Toby and Viola. So, Ashby was sent to see a therapist but it did not help. The therapist then suggested sending him to Stanfield, which Lennox and Rosalind agreed on because they wanted Ashby out of their house because he was ruining their "perfect family."
