Music was his world. He lived it and breathed it. But when he wasn't thinking of a tune or writing a song, Ashby loved to read. When he was young, his mother used to read to him every night and it was not Dr. Suess. She read him adult novels. Mysteries and murders; fantasy worlds; and stories of love. Not that he would let anyone know it, but Ashby was a sucker for romance novels. Not the harlequin type, but the true genuine ones. He desperately longed to fall in love, but he was always alone, and when he got himself caught up in a novel, in a character, he actually felt like he belonged somewhere.
Heath Library was a dead zone. No one was here...not even the nerds! Ashby walked past the sleeping librarian and went to the fiction section. Since no one was around, he set his guitar on a huge rectangular table. He always carried the guitar with him. It was his prized possession and he would not know what to do if he lost it. With his fingertip, he browsed the titles of the novels. There was nothing in particular that he wanted to read and he wished that he was not so shy, that way he could ask someone for a recommendation. Frustrated, Ashby bit his bottom lip in deep concentration. He knelt down to take a look at the books on the lower shelf.

Mayumi walked into the library, she was wearing a light wash pair of blue skinny-jeans. Her slippers, and a white tee shirt. She had her black hoodie on as always tho. The small blond girl looked at the sleeping librarian, Wow...Good job. She thought to herself. She wanted something to read since she had been forced to leave all her books at home when she was sent here. She walked over to the fiction section. She started with the 'Z' authors and worked her way backward. She wasn't paying attention as she moved down the isles silently. She bumped into someone, she looked up and blushed. She looked down quickly averting her green eyes. She had put her makeup on lightly today. Just some sheer gloss and mascara. She was only going to the library after all.
"I'm so sorry." She whispered because she was still in a library. She stepped back quickly tripping over her own feet. She landed on her ass but got up quickly. She turned bright red then looked around to see if anyone had noticed her fall. She was sure the guy in front of her had seen, so that was bad enough. She would have to go back to her room and give herself a few good cuts because of her stupidness. She walked off quickly to the next isle over. She scanned the books but she couldn't get that guy out of her head. He was cutie and she had acted like an idiot. She pulled a book at random, then got it checked out. She sat in one of the little reading nooks and opened the book. She could cut her arm soon, she just wanted to see what this random book she had pulled was about. She noticed a guitar case laying on one of the tables, she wonder if he played. Tags: Ashby Notes: I'm at school and its almost over so thats why the short post. Sitting on the floor in front of the "S" section, minding his own business, Ashby was suddenly knocked over. He rolled sideways, like a domino, which brought a smile to his face because he was immaturely picturing himself with a domino body and his face plastered on it. Boy, was he silly. Maybe it was the new medication. Putting himself upward, he look at the girl who bumped into him. She was petite and ghastly pale, but it look wonderful on her. "Um, it's...okay." He mumbled shyly.
Hearing a thud!, he turned to see that she was now on the floor. Ashby looked around. Was there some mysterious force that just knocked her down? Or did she simply trip? Being the gentleman he was, he started to get up so he could extend a shaking hand to her to help her up. But before he could even blink, she was up and gone. How strange. Ashby frowned to himself, but shrugged it off. He was used to having people run away from him, back home, it happened all the time. He was also used to people running after him.
Pulling a thick novel out with a green wrapping covering the hardcover, he skimmed the back briefly. It did not catch his attention, therefore he placed it back in his rightful spot. Ashby continued to scan the shelves over to the other side of the bookcase where the girl was seated, unnoticed by him.

What had she pulled off of the shelve!? She was one chapter in and it made no sense. It had something to do with a dragon and people or something. She was not interested, but she was interested in something. She watched the boy looking for a book. She closed the book, and went to return it. As she dropped it in the return slot she looked over but he was gone. She figured he had left to get away from the freak in the black hoodie and slippers. She walked back over to the book shelve, and began to search. She pulled a book out with fairies on the front, she giggles quietly at how ridiculous it looked. Putting it back she walked around some more. She wanted her book collection back, at home she had own a library of books. She pulled out a black book and opened it. It was called: CRANK. She opened it and noticed that they were all poems. She liked that so she took it back over to her spot and began to read quietly.
She was reading and was finishing very quickly. She was a fast reader, and she enjoyed that. She could also read three books at once and keep all the plots, characters, and story lines separate. She looked up from her book, and saw the guy looking at the shelve for a book. She bookmarked that page with a gum wrapper she found in her pocket. One of her pet peevs is when people dog-ear pages in books and ultimately destroy books. She walked over to him then tapped him on the shoulder. "I'm sorry about knocking you over...But would you like some help with finding a book?" She felt the blush on her face before it appeared their. She looked at the floor, then at the shelves. Speaking into the shelves, "What kind of book are you looking for...Uh..." She dint know his name! Not that she should have known it...Its just that well she should have asked of something. "My name is Mayumi by the way...But most people call me some nickname that they choose." Back at home she had about twenty-one nicknames alone. Here she was mostly called Mayumi.
She stood back up, but forgot she was leaning into a shelve. A loud 'crack' could be heard as she smacked the back of her head against the top of the shelve. "Ow...Ow...Ow...Ow..." She whimpered softly, sounding like a yelping puppy. She felt tears well up in her eyes but she forced them to stay in her eyes and not roll onto her cheeks. She looked at his face then looked down and blinked. She watched her tears fall straight down, now they wouldn't run down her cheeks. She looked back up at him, and gave a weak smile. She pretended to scratch the back of her head even tho she was actually rubbing it to get rid of some of the pain. She would now have to take a few pills as well as the cutting to get rid of the pain. She looked about the library, then into his face. She smiled shyly. She was so embarrassed. Why did she always manage to get harmed or harm herself around a cute guy? Around a cute girl she was fine, just a little spazzy. But a guy, she was the queen of klutz. She was starting to blush again, because he was probably thinking she was stupid. She looked over to her book, Well..uh...Im just going to go finish my book, but if you want any help just come get me...I will be right over their." She pointed to where her book lay on the small table. Then she walked away, back to her book. Oh how she hoped he would come back and ask for her help.

Ashby was humming to himself and tapping his fingertips on his thighs as he scanned the shelves for a book with a cover or a title that would catch his attention. Feeling a light tap on the shoulder, he turned slowly, wondering who to expect. He came face to face with the same pale girl that had knocked him over a few minutes ago. As she spoke to him, he stared at her blankly. His therapist wanted him to work on looking people as they spoke to him, but he still was too shy to look people in the eyes. He hoped that she did not think he was rude or anything. Nervously, he cleared his throat. "It's alright. Um, I'm not quite sure..." He whispered; not because it was a library, but because he was genuinely a quiet person. "That's a different name..." He paused, his mind on his mother for a moment. She liked different. "I'm Ashby."
Once more, this girl had found a way to hurt herself. When she hit her head on the shelf, he winced, but did not go to help her because he was scared to. She was so clumsy, but then again, everyone could be at times. Rubbing her head to ease the pain, he noticed that her eyes watered. Ashby looked away, not wanting her to know that he noticed. But he guessed that she might have taken that the wrong way because then she left after telling him where she would be seated. He didn't stop her, instead, he watched her go and sit down. Then, he went to retrieve his guitar and sit down beside her, all in one fluid, silent motion.

Mayumi looked up from her book, she only had about twenty-five pages left. She stuck her book mark in and looked at Ashby. She felt a slight smile playing at the corners of her mouth. "Uh....So....um guitar?" She blushed and looked away. She was so embarrassed, she had hurt herself so much today. She felt the soft pink, and slightly red blush spread across her face. She picked up her book and began to read it once again. But she was done with it all to quickly. She looked over at him, then stood up. "Im...uh....just going to put my book back... She walked off quickly, then put her book away. She walked back over to him, then sat back down in her spot.
She pulled out her iPod and turned it on. She looked at the screen, then used the navigations to get to the music menu. She wasn't in the mood to listen to pop music. See because of the way everyone viewed her she never let anyone see her iPod. She had all kinds of music, but people just assumed that she listened to metal all the time. She DID listen to metal, but not all the time. She picked a song called Monster. She placed one ear bud in her ear, then closed her eyes. She hummed along softly, she enjoyed humming when she couldn't sing. She started talking to herself in her head, You are a monster Mayumi. I don't know why you insist on staying here. I cant see why you haven't left yet. He doesn't want you, no one does. Your ugly and small and stupid. She listened to her inner voice, she was making herself upset once again.

When she mentioned his guitar, he glanced at it and then back to her. "Um...yes. I also play the piano..." He mentioned softly. He did not want to make it seem like he was bragging. He actually preferred to play piano, but a guitar was obviously more portable than a piano. Mayumi did not seem to want to talk to him, because she then opened her book and finished reading the rest of it right there. Uncomfortable, he looked down and picked at the hole in the knee of his skinny jeans. He felt embarrassed. Maybe she was wondering why he was even here. She probably did not want to talk to him at all. It would probably make sense for him to get up and leave, but his legs felt as heavy as lead.
Quickly, she walked back to her spot and sat down. She was so small in comparison to him. They were both thin, but she was petite while he was tall and gangly. He felt like and out cast sitting beside her. Once more, she ignored him. Ashby frowned, not really understanding. He cleared his throat and shifted his position. He wanted to talk to her, but his words were stuck in his throat and he was scared to. He placed his shaking hands in his pockets and looked over at her. He needed to try. "W-what are you um...uh...listening to?" He stammered out, hoping she heard him because he didn't think that he could grow the balls to ask her again.

The song had changed by the time he had asked the question. "Oh...I'm just listening to Walls...By The Rocket Summer." She blushed once more and looked up at him. "So the piano too?...I cant play anything, I sing in my free time...But I'm not any good." She looked at the floor then at her skinny-jeans. They still had some of the color she had put on them when she was younger. She pulled at he sleeve, she was so thin. He probably thinks I'm some kind of skinny short freak.. She looked back up at him, she thought he was so very good looking. She smiled weakly at him, she was so shy around new people. But she always was, but she was really trying to work on that small problem. She was unsure about what to do or say next because she dint think she was interesting.
She jumped suddenly, her song had changed and she wasn't prepared for the loudness. When she had jumped she had let out a small squeal. "Well...I guess I'm listening to Electric Feel by MGMT," She wasn't sure if he knew about either of those bands, she dint really listen to popular bands and songs. She liked things that other people hadn't heard of before. She smiled, then turned down the volume. "You probably don't even know who I'm talking about...I don't really listen to popular bands and music. I like things people have never heard of before." She pulled out the ear buds and turned her iPod off. She checked her phone quickly, then shoved everything back into her pockets. "What do you like to listen to?" She asked him quietly. She then began to draw on her pants with her fingertip. She realized that she might be making him sad or depressed. Kids had told her she had that effect on others. She hoped she wasn't having that effect on him.

I REFUSE TO CLOSE MY EYES
::I HAVE LOVED, AND I HAVE LOST I have turned, and I have tossed I have listened, and I have watched I've gave into this for long enough I have lost, and I have loved Sleep has stolen far too much So don't close your eyes, not just yet SLEEP IS JUST A COUSIN OF DEATH = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =
hearing her selection, ashby nodded curtly. he heard of the rocket summer and he did like them. he liked a lot of music actually. he was not very picky and he tried to give everything a chance before he just tossed it aside; never listening to it again. i'm sure you are.... he whispered to her. he felt the same way about his talents too. he never thought he was any good either. even though back at his old school his teachers would beg him to play at the talent show or try and convince him to apply to juliard. he always tuned them out though. he was afraid to try and get rejected. he didn't want to dream an unrealistic dream.
she jumped and he twitched, for she had surprised him by her sudden action. he was about to ask her if she was okay, when she mentioned that her song changed. he smiled at the new song, it was one of his favorites. she continued to speak about how he might have never heard of these bands and he felt a little insulted, which made him frown without realizing it. he was a musician after all, he was supposed to know about a lot of bands. actually... he began. i...i do know the bands you are talking about. um, i know of a lot of bands... he chewed on his bottom lip, thinking. acoustic and folk when i play the guitar...classical and soul when i play the piano... he told her before realizing that's what he loved to play, not listen to. i listen to everything. .

"Oh!" She exclaimed quietly. She saw him frown and assumed she had done something wrong. "I...I'm sorry..." She looked at the floor, quietly. She listened to him explain to her what he liked to play, then what he listened to. "I've always wanted to play the piano...But I was never any good at it." She stretched her small hands out in front of her face. The paleness was striking, considering that her nails had been painted black. "My hands are just to small to play anything...Thats why I enjoy singing..." She smiled at her hands shyly, then spoke again quietly, "I also listen to everything." She shut her mouth quickly and covered it with both of her hands, once she realized what she was saying. She had never wanted anyone to know about her love of music. I mean people had always seen her with her iPod, but no one knew what she was listening to. They had always assumed it was scremo, or metal, or rock.
She dropped her hands to her sides and looked at his chest, "P-Please don't tell anyone I listen to everything...They judge me enough as it is..." She had hoped she wasn't a poser or a liar. She wasn't any of those things, people just dint understand that the 'emo' kids listen to more than what is expected of them. She wished she had her sketch-pad, she wanted to doodle as they talked. She needed something to do with her hands. She stood up quietly, and walked over to the front desk. She spoke to the librarian, to ask about paper and a pencil. The woman handed her a few sheets of paper and a wooden pencil. She watched as the woman went back to sleep as she was walking away. She grabbed a hard backed book as she was walking back over to Ashby. She sat down next to him again, then looked at his face. She was going to draw him, as they talked. "So...um Ashby right? Do you write any songs?" She was drawing him as an anime character, it was her favorite drawing style.

he smiled slightly, shaking his head. it's okay. he told her because it really was not that big of a deal. he had worst things said to him before. as she splayed her hands out in front of her, he looked at them. they were small. you have hamburger helper hands. he teased her. he looked at her, still smiling. then he held out his hand beside hers to compare. his hands were big, his fingers long and slender. they were perfect for playing musical instruments. after a few seconds, he pulled his hand back. you never know if you can play or not unless you try, you know? he said softly with a shrug.
with a quizzical look on his face, he stared at her. he had no idea why she would be embarrassed at the fact that she loved all types of music. however, she seemed to panic at the fact that she had told him this. what she didn't know was that he was probably the best at keeping secrets because he never had anyone to spill them to. i won't say anything. he assured her before she got up again and walked over to the librarian to retrieve paper and pencil. she must be a drawer. he watched her start to sketch. yes...and i er...compose too. he admitted sheepishly. he did not want it to seem like he was bragging.

She smiled at him, "Well I have tryed...I learned a part of some song when I was about 10...I cant remember exactly." She looked at his hand next to her, it was larger than hers with slender fingers. They were a musicians hands, she had drawers hands. But she dint like to paint or work with clay. She just liked to doodle in her free time. She kept glancing up at him from her paper, then returning to the drawing. She shaded it and then added a few more lines to add definition. "Their!" She said excitedly. "Uh...Here....Um....Yah..." She handed him the slip of paper, she thought to herself Its not very good. But oh well. She looked at her knees, and poked at them with the pencil. She hoped that he liked it, but knowing her luck he was going to burn it or something.
She listened to him say he composed as well, "I write poetry...Thats kinda the same thing right? But you use music and I use words." She sat up a little straighter, and placed her hands on her knees. She smiled shyly, and sighed softly. "Sorry...I just get kinda excited when someone talks about music..." She blushed brightly and looked at the ceiling. She pulled out her phone and checked the time, well she dint really check the time she just pretended to. She had embarrassed herself and she dint know what else to say. She dint want to scare him away or freak him out. She closed her eyes and hummed softly to Walls. She was listening to it in her head, and humming had always calmed her down. But after about half-way thought the song, she remembered that Ashby was here next to her. She stopped suddenly, "I'm so sorry...Its just...Humming...Oh god..." She hid her face in her hands, she was mortified.
