* / HISTORY[/b]I guess you could say everything started when Amy Jarene's boyfriend told her that he loved her. This verbal confession of love was followed by a physical relationship. To both of their dismay the 15 year old girl became pregnant. After the baby boy was born he was placed into an adoption center, so that she could grow up as a normal teenager.
Cole spent the first nine years of his life at the adoption center. During this time he would find corners to be by himself in and would hardly, if ever, interact with the other kids. He did everything by himself and was smaller than the other kids there, even some that were younger than he was, and he became an easy target for bullying. When the workers would ask him who did it to him, he wouldn't say anything, not because he was afraid to, but because he just had trouble talking.
As time went by in the center, Cole started behaving even stranger. He would sit and eat dirt when they went outside, among other things and one of the workers even caught him chewing on his flesh from time to time. He would mimic what other people were doing and when he did open his mouth to speak it was usually only to repeat what someone had said. When Cole started to repeatedly slap himself and stand in the corner banging his head against the wall one of the workers decided to take him to the doctor to get him checked out.
When the results came back it revealed that the young boy had Tourette's Syndrome, and the worker feared that because of this Cole would be picked on even more and that he would never get adopted. This was proved wrong one afternoon when the Shapere's showed up. Mr. and Mrs. Shapere had been trying for a child for years now and after two miscarriages, they were ready to go on to their second plan, adoption. Originally they had wanted to adopt a young child, the oldest age being 3 years old, but when James Shapere saw the eight year old boy sitting by himself his heart went out to him.
Upon adopting him, the Shapere's were told about his condition, but they didn't care and they would do their best to treat it. When he was legally theirs’ they took him to the doctor's to get a prescription to help control it, something he hadn't been able to get while at the adoption center. When the Shapere's brought him home, they put him in a room that was next to theirs’ and told him that if he needed anything that he could come to them because they were family now. Over a year went by before he spoke a word to them.
The first year he was with them, Mrs. Shapere took off from work and home schooled Cole to try and see what he knew and what he needed to learn before sending him to public school. Cole hadn't been taught a whole lot at the center, but what he didn't know he picked up quickly. The new school year rolled around and Cole was enrolled into the 3rd grade.
The following year Mrs. Shapere discovered that she was pregnant and Cole's younger brother Thomas was born. The attention that was once put on Cole was now on Thomas. This wasn't something that greatly bothered Cole, but with all the focus on the newborn his parents would often forget to give him his medication, and his once controlled Tourette's started becoming worse.
Just as he had been at the adoption center, in the public school system Cole was severely bullied from the rest of his elementary school years on up to high school. He never had any friends, though there were those people that weren't complete assholes to him. These were very few though. Even those who didn't pick on Cole themselves, got a laugh out of watching the people who did.
At 14, the friendless Cole, found a companion named Jeffrey. Jeffrey was someone that Cole had no problem talking to and was the only one who could ever get a smile or laugh out of him. The only problem was Jeffrey wasn't real, at least not to others he wasn't. The fact that Cole was 14 years old and had a imaginary friend, got him picked on even more than he already had been.
When he was in middle school a group of boys started referring to him as the alien and the martian because his mannerisms and the way he acted was so different from everyone else. Cole didn't think anything of this at first, until he was about 15 years old and started to think maybe he was one. They were right after all, he didn't act like everyone else did, not even his parents. Besides they weren't his real parents anyways. Maybe he was like Clark Kent, an alien who had landed on earth when he was young and was taken in by a couple of humans. Maybe this was the reason that he could see Jeffrey and others couldn't.
After 'discovering' that he was an alien, Cole started trying to find ways to get back to his home planet, which often lead to him getting injured by falling off the roof of the house. At first the Shapere's just thought it was a phase that he was going through, but after a year when it continued and Cole hadn't stopped talking to Jeffrey, the Shapere's decided to seek professional help.
Cole was set up to start seeing a psychiatrist, but when his sessions came, he would walk in, sit on the couch, and say nothing. They tried session after session, thinking maybe he just needed to get used to it, but Cole never talked, but he would tell Jeffrey all about what the woman had been saying and the questions she'd been trying to get him to answer, when he got back home.
Desperate to help their son the Shapere's found a last resort in Stanfield. They hoped that the people here would be able to get Cole to open up, and to help him see that he doesn't need Jeffrey and that he isn't an alien. Cole has been here for around four years now, and he has yet to make much progress.
